In the first book, the story is set in mid-17th-century France. The protagonist, a real historical figure named Michel de Grammont, is training for a career as a naval officer.

       After falling for Arnis, a Philippine martial art, the young nobleman plunges into a world of perilous challenges. Alongside his mentor, he goes undercover to explore the treacherous Court of Miracles, where danger is a constant companion.

      Michel has a rare gift for making friends, looking past social status, age, or nationality to see a person’s true character. This inner strength will prove vital for survival in a world where the ocean's depths hide any human atrocity.   

In the second part, after a duel, 17-year-old Michel de Grammont, a descendant of an ancient aristocratic family from Franche-Comté, is forced to flee his family estate in France. He heads to the New World as the first mate on a merchant vessel. Left behind in his homeland are his family, friends from the Parisian Court of Miracles (a connection he kept strictly secret), and his mentor Isagani, who spent years teaching Michel the martial art of Arnis.

Right before setting sail, Grammont is unexpectedly joined by Greg Varenberg and Nicolas Morel, his old companions from his days in the Mediterranean.

Upon arriving in Martinique, they become entangled in a political intrigue where the conspirators stop at nothing—even kidnapping Marie de Poitiers, the royal engineer's daughter. To survive and protect their loved ones, the friends will have to give it their all, putting all their knowledge and experience to the test.
